I suppose I was too young to remember Nadia's heyday, but she has certainly led a fascinating life.

Ode on an Olympic Gymnast
inspired by watching women's gymnastics

Gymnast girl, o gymnast girl
you make me flip with joy
with your legs of steel
and calloused heels
and body of a boy.

You're so darn cute, o gymnast girl
I think that you're just peachy--
Each meaty hock
screams Eastern bloc,
like Nadia Comaneci.

I wish that I could hoist you up
above my head and smile
but my girly arms
would cause real harm--
I'd drop you in a pile!

I'm not as tough as rock like you
but think you're quite a lady,
with your graceful wrists
and mighty fists
and bangs from 1980.
